Sky TV and Money Troubles

is it me…

a close member of my family told me a horror story of events involving SKY and it is so incredulous I had to have a rant!

The person concerned lives in an apartment block, which Sky sent direct mail to informing them that they could have Sky+ and HD. Sky was called, payment for deposit or installation or whatever swiftly taken and direct debit set up over the phone, job done in 15 minutes max.

When the engineer called to fit Sky HD, he immediately announced that the apartments on “this floor” cannot get Sky+ due to the cabling within the building but you could still take advantage of HD. If they were not happy you had 28 days to cancel and a refund would be given.

Now after about 24 hours, the person concerned decided it was not worth all the money for just HD if no Sky+ features so rang Sky to cancel. Now to cut a very very long story short, about 8 phone calls, 2 e-mails and 1 letter later, Sky acknowledged the contract was to be terminated, but due to their inability to act quickly, 2 direct debit payments had been taken despite the set top box having been boxed up since the day after it was installed awaiting collection!

Now this you are not going to believe.

When Sky confirmed that the refund was due, the operator who was very pleasant does not have the authority to action the refund, only request it. Authorisation takes up to 2 days and payment by cheque only, takes a further 21 days!!

Now as we speak, the cheque for the refund has still to be received and when it is, it needs to be taken to the bank and await clear funds, thus at its best it is maybe 8 to 12 weeks from cancellation to receiving a refund.

How can it be that Sky can take money off you by phone within 15 minutes, or in my case I order a Film within seconds, yet they are unable or is it unwilling to act responsibly in refunding monies? Do I detect a specific desire to withhold payments to customers who are entitled?

What would Sky think if all its millions of customers acted this way towards them and saidm “you know what, you can wait a further 21 days before I will pay you and you can have it by cheque!”

Or is it just me?
